Privacy Policy
Greyshore contains no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind, and it requires no account. The only thing it ever sends is your result on the daily island, and only if you choose a name for the daily leaderboard. That submission carries a random identifier the game makes up and the name you pick, which is shown publicly on the board.
Who this policy is from
Greyshore is developed and published by Macleod Computer Application Developments, a sole proprietorship based in Canada. In this policy, "the game" means the Greyshore application, and "I" means the developer.
What the game never collects
The game does not:
- ask you to create an account, sign in, or give an email address
- collect your real name, phone number, or location
- read your contacts, photos, files, microphone, or camera
- use your device's hardware identifiers or its advertising identifier
- contain advertising, analytics, telemetry, or usage tracking
- use cookies or any similar tracking technology
- sell your information, or share it with advertisers or data brokers
Greyshore is sold for a single price and has no in-app purchases.
The daily leaderboard
Every day the game offers one island that is the same for every player, with a public board of the best scores. Taking part is optional. The first time you finish a daily island, the game asks what name to post your score under. If you choose "Not now", nothing is sent and your score stays on your device; the game will ask again after your next daily island.
Once you have entered a name, the game remembers it and submits each daily result you finish from then on. Each submission sends:
- a random identifier the game generated on your device the first time it ran. It is not derived from your device, your store account, or anything else about you, and its only purpose is to keep one best score per player per day
-
the display name you chose: 1 to 16 letters, numbers, spaces, or the
characters
. _ : - - the record of that day's game: the hero you picked, the choices you made, and the timed list of commands you gave during the battle
- the score your copy of the game calculated
The server replays that record through the game itself to work out the real score, so the board cannot be filled with invented results. It then keeps the random identifier, your display name, the verified score, the time it was verified, and a SHA-256 fingerprint of the record, which lets me detect a record being submitted twice. The record itself is not stored.
Your display name and score are public. The board shows the top 100 entries for each day, with each entry's rank, display name, score, and verification time, to every player and to anyone who requests it from the server. Boards for past days remain viewable. Please do not use your real name or anything else that identifies you as your display name.
Your IP address
As with any connection over the internet, the server sees the IP address a submission comes from. It is used to limit each address to 10 submissions an hour, a count held in memory that is discarded when the server restarts. The address also appears in the server's logs, which are used only for troubleshooting and preventing abuse. The web server deletes its logs after 14 days, and the system log deletes its oldest entries once it reaches a fixed size. IP addresses are never stored with leaderboard entries.
Where the information is kept
The leaderboard runs on a server I rent from Hetzner Online GmbH, located in Germany, so information on it is also subject to German law. Leaderboard entries are kept for as long as the daily leaderboard runs, unless you ask for yours to be deleted.
Information stored on your device
The game saves your progress, your unlocks, your settings, the random identifier, and your chosen display name locally on your own device. This information stays on your device, apart from what the daily leaderboard sends as described above, and is removed when you uninstall the game. Reinstalling gives you a new identifier that is not linked to the old one.
If your device is set up to back itself up — for example through iCloud or Google's Android backup — those save files may be included in that backup. That backup belongs to you and is handled by Apple or Google under their own terms, not by me.
The game can copy a replay of a run to your clipboard if you ask it to, so that you can send it with a bug report. It is only sent anywhere if you paste it and send it yourself.
Third-party services
Greyshore contains no third-party software development kits, no advertising networks, no analytics providers, and no social media integrations. The daily leaderboard is my own service and is not operated by any third party.
The app stores
Greyshore is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play. When you download or purchase the game, Apple and Google handle that transaction themselves and collect information about it under their own privacy policies. That happens between you and them, and I have no control over it.
Apple and Google may also make aggregated crash and performance reports available to me through their developer consoles. These reports are produced by the platform itself rather than by anything built into Greyshore, are combined across many users, and do not identify you.
Their handling of your information is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy and Google's Privacy Policy.
Children
Greyshore is not directed at children under 13, and the daily leaderboard asks only for a made-up display name, never for a real name or contact details. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has posted identifying information as a display name, contact me and I will delete that entry.
Your rights
Canadian privacy law, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), gives you the right to ask an organisation what personal information it holds about you, to see it, and to have it corrected. Depending on where you live, your provincial law or the law of your own country may give you further rights, such as requesting deletion of your information or objecting to its use.
To see, correct, or delete your leaderboard entries, email me with your display name and roughly which days you played. Because there are no accounts, I cannot confirm who owns a display name, so I may ask for details that help me find the right entries, and I will delete rather than disclose where there is doubt. To stop taking part, uninstall and reinstall the game and choose "Not now" when asked for a name.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of Greyshore collects anything beyond what is described here, this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the effective date at the top of this page will change. Substantive changes will be noted in the game's release notes on the store listing.
